After a certain age one begins to catch fleeting glimpses of mortality and becomes aware that life is not, as we assumed in our younger days, eternal. It is then that we begin to understand the crankiness of older folks, as they realize that life ahead is much shorter, and probably not nearly as much fun, as the years behind.
